When the mail comes each day, I often think about whether there might be something interesting in today’s delivery. For me that means something personal, like a letter or an invitation. It may be written on a beautiful or creative note card or it may be printed on a piece of scratch paper, but it means that someone thought about me. It means that they took the time to sit down and put their thoughts on paper, so that I could read them And perhaps I’ll re-read them and savor them again and again or put them in a box for posterity.
“A letter is a gift. It can turn a private moment into an exalted experience. Unlike the phone, a letter is never an interruption. A letter doesn’t require immediate attention; it can be saved and savored for the appropriate time and place. A letter is a treat with no strings attached.” This well worded description of a letter comes from the pen of Alexandra Stoddard in her book – Gift of a Letter.
In the New Testament we have twenty-one letters. Most of them were written by Paul to either individuals or to churches in various locations. These letters were very personal expressions of affection, concern, instruction, encouragement, and inspiration. They have communicated to the church through the centuries essential truths about God and His Son, Jesus, and about how life is to be lived by the power of the Holy Spirit.
As you embark on this study of 5 of Paul’s letters, I pray that God will continue to “complete the good work which He has already begun in you – until the day of Jesus Christ”. (Philippians 1: 6) Perhaps you will even be motivated to continue on to study the rest of Paul’s letters when you have completed this series.
Sincerely, Marilyn Miller
