If you are thinking about taking a journey to a place where you have never been before, what is one of the first things that you might want to get? No doubt, a very good travel guide with information about your destinations – how to get there, what to expect, what to pack, suggestions for things to do, places to see and go, and realistic expectations about the cost, would be a very wise choice.

Would you leave this book at home once you have started on your trip? Of course not! It will become an indispensable guide every place you go and the information will come alive as you actually experience the places and cultures described in your book. You might even find yourself making notes in the margins, turning down the corners of certain pages and developing a list of your own travel suggestions so that you can share them with your friends and family.

There’s one book in the New Testament that many have called the greatest guidebook to the Christian faith. The apostle Paul wrote this book to people whom he had never met. They were new believers – a mixture of Jews and Gentiles, and they lived in a city where he really wanted to visit. But, meanwhile, they needed to have basic information to help them understand the fundamental truths they were to believe and how Jesus wanted them to live as believers in His death and resurrection.

While this letter was written many centuries ago, the foundation of our beliefs and the instructions for our behavior are totally relevant for us today. I pray that as you study Romans, the truths that God will reveal to you will help you experience this journey of life with understanding, clarity, purpose and delight.

Sincerely, Marilyn Miller
