When the circumstances of life are just plain depressing and God seems far away, where do you turn for help and hope? When events take you by surprise, what is your typical kind of reaction? When you are faced with troubles, illness or misunderstanding, how do you view God? When “good things happen to bad people and bad things happen to good people”, what is your explanation and response?
The BOOK of PSALMS or THE BOOK of PRAISES is a great guide for those who want to learn from the Bible how to respond to life God’s way. Ronald Allen in his book, And I WIll Praise Him, says “Praise is one of the most elemental, fundamental, and necessary factors of the life of faith in this and any age. It is the goal and direction of all creation.”
This ancient songbook for the people of God, the Israelites, was written over an expanse of 1,000 years, from the time of Moses (Psalm 90 – 1490 B.C.) to the time of Ezra (about 440 B.C.). It was in Ezra’s time that under the direction of the Holy Spirit men compiled this collection into the format as we know it today and the small descriptive phrases at the begining of many of the poems were put into place. There are many different types of Psalms and they can be divided in to 5 sections.
In this study, we will look at 16 of the Psalms found in the first section, Psalms 1 -41. There is no better place to learn how to face your life experiences and your emotions honestly before God and to be moved by His Spirit into a place of trust and confidence in Him. Creating your own “Psalm”, patterned after the Biblical one, will be a challenge and an enormous blessing in your life.
I pray that God will “show you His ways; teach you His paths; lead you in to His truth and that you will find Him to be the God of your salvation” as you study the Book of Psalms. (Psalm 25: 4 – 5)
