“Be strong and very courageous!” When is the last time you heard or said similar words? Perhaps it was to a friend who was embarking on an adventure alone. Or it may have been to a child or grandchild who was going to camp for the first time. Maybe it was to your husband as he faced an unknown medical assessment. Perhaps you were repeating them to yourself as you faced a new challenge or tried to break an old habit. “You can do it!” “Just give it a try!” “Take heart.” “it won’t be as hard as you think it is!” We have so many ways of trying to minimize fear and find courage.
The Lord God said to Joshua, “I will be with you as I was with Moses. I wil never leave you or forsake you. Be strong and courageous.” Joshua had experienced training under Moses and had had opportuniites to believe God’s promises in the past, but his new challenges were enormous and the temptation to “do it on your own strength” was always a threat. And so God gave to Joshua some very simple instructions accompanied by some meaningful promises. And some very amazing things happened.
Don’t you think that God is willing to do the same thing for us today? I do. As you embark on this study of the life of Joshua, I pray that you will learn and experiencea the kind of courage and strength that comes from the Lord and brings honor to His name.
